Sleeping bag

If you are planning to sleep in albergues, there will be no bedding in any of those so you must take a sleeping bag with you.

Some of the albergues offer additional blankets, but they are no good to sleep under as they are old and even have bad smell. They are just good if you crazy cold, so you put that on your sleeping bag πŸ™‚

So what kind of sleeping bad do you need?

When choosing the best sleeping bag for you, you should consider two things:

  1. Weight
  2. Comfortable temperature

Weight

There is now vast variety of sleeping bags so it can get pretty tricky to choose the one for you πŸ™‚

When you consider that you will have to carry sleeping bag every day with you on your back, you need a sleeping bag which weights as little as possible.

There are sleeping bags which weight as little as 300 g, but then the price goes up very fast πŸ™‚ The less weight, the more money you need πŸ˜‰ My sleeping bag weights 950g and I would say that it’s quite comfortable. It’s definitely not too much and it takes very little space. I can safely suggest to buy such weight sleeping bag. If you can afford and want to have smaller, please do that, the less weight, the better it is for your back πŸ™‚

Comfortable temperature

As days are pretty hot in Spain, it can get pretty cold during nights, especially if you walk in winter, spring or autumn.

You may have +15 during the day, but -1 at night and keep in mind, that some of albergues have zero heating, so it gets pretty cold… and it is so bad to wake up because of cold… so bad… and it is so hardΒ to go to sleep again.

When you choose a sleeping bag you will notice that there are some temperatures shown on the sleeping bag, but the most important for you is COMFORT temperature. If all goes ok and they do not lie, you should feel pretty good inside sleeping bag at that particular temperature.

My suggestion would be to buy a sleeping bag which has comfort temperature at about 0 degrees by Celsius πŸ™‚ You shouldn’t get too hot inside it when days are warmer or the heating is on (and it’s always better to be too hot than to cold, you just open your sleeping bag:) ) and you won’t get too cold if temperature outside goes down to 0 degrees or less.

There are sleeping bags which has comfort temperature at -10 or -20 degrees by Celsius, but don’t bother buying those as they are for mountaineers and people enjoying sleeping outside in winter time πŸ™‚ Such sleeping bags weight more and they take more space as well πŸ™‚

Conclusion

To conclude, I would say that you sleeping bag should have these two features:

  1. Weight up to 1kg/1000g.
  2. Comfort temperature at around 0 degrees.

Buen Camino!
