Wandern von Grindelwald nach Kleine Scheidegg (Wandern in der Schweiz)

Best hikes in Grindelwald, Eiger mountain

Grindelwald

Grindelwald itself really deserves a seperate article or even dozen of articles as it is an idyllic Swiss village in the middle of huge mountains all around it.

But this time let’s talk about my and my friends hike up to Kleine Scheidegg.

Grindelwald offers quite many hiking routes all around it, but Kleine Scheidegg is maybe the top destination for hikers in Grindelwald.

The hike

First when we came we went straight to our guesthouse which has a name of “Panorama” and it really offers an amazing view straight to the mountains, it feels like huge mountain walls are next to you and you can reach it by hand.

“Panorama” guesthouse is higher than city centre so this is why such amazing views are not blocked by any other buildings.

Swiss Alps in the summer

To the city centre it’s just 2 km from our guesthouse, but it’s quite steep narrow paths to it. On the way we saw quite many paragliders landing in a small meadow between houses and a small farm of Lamas which was quite unexpected for me ๐Ÿ™‚

From the city centre you can clearly see the direction to Kleine Scheidegg and the sign says that it would take you 3h40min to reach it.

Still, from Grindelwald we have to walk down as we have to reach train station of Grund which is the lowest altitude for us that day ๐Ÿ™‚

From Grund train station where is as well very clear signs to Kleine Sheidegg so there’s very little room to get lost.

So, the beginning of this path to Kleine Scheidegg is pretty steep, so if you ever go there, do not get discouraged and keep the low pace as if you go fast, you can lose your strength pretty fast. It’s really pretty steep, so take it easy ๐Ÿ™‚ And such steep path continues till the secondย restaurant on this mountain, it will take you about 1h30min to reach it:) So if you get tired, just relax there, take a cup of coffee or some ice cream and enjoy the views. That is what we did and recharged ourselves to continue our hike to Kleine Scheidegg. As well, there are quite many places where you can get Alps water, so you shouldn’t worry too much about carrying too much water in your rucksack.

Hiking Grindelwald

Later on, the path is not so steep and it is much more easy. There are still some sections which are pretty steep, but not as long as in the beginning. It is always very important to choose the right pace.

On the way we got pretty close to the famous Eiger mountain and there are even signs with the best climbing routes up to the top. But for this to be done, you will need all the climbing tools and some experience in rock climbing. It’s really steep rock which goes 1800 m. So, that’s not for the beginners ย ๐Ÿ™‚

Kleine Scheidegg

It’s quite strange that we meet just couple of people hiking up to Kleine Scheidegg as weather was really really good and it was Sunday, but we met dozens of people hiking down from Kleine Scheidegg (you can take train up there from Grindelwald). When I was just 500 meters from Kleine Scheidegg I met couple of Japanese people who asked for directions to Grindelwald and where pretty schocked that it will take them more than 2 hours to go down ๐Ÿ™‚ They stopped and discussed maybe 10 minutes to discuss if they should continue this hike ๐Ÿ™‚

On the top, in Kleine Scheidegg, there are always quite many people as it is the middle point for the train trip to Jungfraujoch (top of the Europe). In Kleine Scheidegg you can find few nice clothes shops, restaurants and amazing views to glaciers and mountain valleys. From Kleine Scheidegg you can as well continue hike to the other side of mountain to the city of Lauterbrunnen.

We decided to have our lunch ย (sandwiches) in Kleine Scheidegg and have some rest, but as we were eating, really big clouds started to show up and covered all the sun, it became quite dark very soon and the wind made weather pretty cold.

So we just finished our meals and decided to go back to Grindelwald which is always down down down.

By the way, it took us 2h30min to reach Kleine Scheidegg from Grindelwald, so I believe that if you do not hurry at all, take your time, control your pace, you can reach Kleine Scheidegg in 3h40min as suggested on the signs in Grindelwald:)

Going down

As we started to walk down, it started to rain, so we decided to run down a little bit, but as we were with big backpacks it was not very comfortable and actually the rain was not that strong, so after few minutes we continue our trip walking.

On the way down we met three youngsters going up who were very interested if they can find some snow on the way up ๐Ÿ™‚ We assured them that they will find some snow just in couple of minutes and they were very happy about it. I assume that they live in the place where there is no snow ๐Ÿ™‚

As we were walking down the weather was really getting worse and worse, we could saw huge clouds hanging above Grindelwald all the time. Those clouds could move further away, but a huge mountain blocked them and they just stayed in that position ๐Ÿ™‚

For me, hiking down is always less pleasurable than hiking up. It’s harder on muscles to hike up, but it’s much more painful on my feet when hiking down ๐Ÿ™‚ I hate it. And especially in the end, when the path was pretty steep, the pain was bigger and bigger ๐Ÿ™‚

Hiking in Switzerland

When we reached the Grund train station it was raining pretty hard and we had to go up to Grindelwald and then up to our guesthouse ๐Ÿ™‚ In Grindelwald we decided to look for some food as it was already 7 pm ๐Ÿ™‚ You must know that in Switzerland, on Sundays, almost all the shops are closed, but as Grindelwald is kind of resort, we found couple of small shops open ๐Ÿ™‚

On our last couple of kilometres the rain was pouring pretty hard and then we reached our place of sleep that night, we were soaking wet ๐Ÿ™‚

To conclude

I would say that this route up to Kleine Scheidegg is maybe the most beautiful one which Grindelwald can offer. If you have a chance to go to Grindelwald, just take your bag and enjoy the views ๐Ÿ™‚ If you are too tired on the top, take a train down ๐Ÿ™‚

All in all, from guesthouse to Kleine Scheidegg and back, it took us 5h30min, 26,3km, total ascent was 1380m, highest point at Kleine Scheidegg was 2116 meters above sea level.
