Rarest snakes in the world – find out what they are!

Snakes are limbless, elongated carnivorous reptiles that are known to inhabit different habitats across the world – that is how they are explained in the dictionary, but there’s so much more: some people love snakes and can play around with them or even keep them as pets, some people hate them and even have phobias, but no matter what, snakes are fascinating animals, so what are the rarest snakes in the world? 

These creatures are ectothermic in nature and they have scales that cover their body. The snakes are having several joints just like their lizard ancestors and n this enables them to swallow bigger prey than their bodies. 

The species are known to have their organs side by side and this makes them more effective thereby thriving in different habitats around the world.

Living snakes are found in different parts of the world except the continent of Antarctica.  The smaller islands around the world such as Hawaii, Iceland, and Ireland all have some small species although they are not native to these regions.

There are over thirty snake families that are and this is made up of 3900 species and 520 genera.  These snakes’ range in size, color, and shape, among others.

Some of the snakes are as tiny as 4 inches while others are as long as 23 feet long.  The diversity of the snakes is usually determined by the geographical location, the species as well as the unique features.  Most of the snakes are nonvenomous and although some of them have venom they are known to use the venom to kill or subdue their prey. 

In humans, the venom can be very dangerous and it is critical to note that this would cause death or fatalities in humans. 

Snakes are known to trigger fear in many people and during your trip to different areas across the world about 600 snake species are venomous. 

These snakes have some of the most adaptable characteristics and you can find them in different habitats across the world. Some of the snakes are far more common while others are rare around the world. Here are some of the rare snakes around the globe.

Tancitaran dusky rattlesnake

Rattlesnake

This is an endangered species that is located in the western and central parts of Mexico. It is classified as an endangered species.  These snakes are unique and they are known to thrive in the pine-oak forests and areas that have an altitude below 1500 meters above sea level. They can grow up to 68 centimeters long. 

The male is longer than the female counterparts.  The snakes have heat-sensing pits between their nostrils and eyes and they are usually nocturnal which means that they thrive at night. They prefer this time of the day because of the lower temperature.  The fragmented forests, volcanic activity, and habitat decline have made it difficult to know the exact size of the snake.

Kikuzato’s brook snake

The Kikuzato brook snake is a very endangered species that you are going to find on Kumejima island in Japan. It is a venomous snake and it is a semiaquatic species. There are very few species of this snake because of the rare nature of the species.

Alcatrazes Lacehead

This is a very very rare snake that is found in southeastern Brazil and it is venomous.  The Alcatraz pit vipers are the only creatures that you will find in eastern Brazil near Sao Paulo. They inhabit a habitat that is less than 100 square kilometers. They usually consume a wide array of creatures such as centipedes, and cockroaches among others.

The Ilha Alcatrazes were connected to the Brazilian mainland, however, the rising oceans have caused this region to be detached. The island creatures were cut off hence their endangered nature.

Wagner’s Viper

The Wagner’s viper is another endangered and very rare snake that you are going to find in different habitats across the world.

The snake is venomous and they are critically endangered. They are vipers and they can be found in the western part of Iran and the eastern parts of Turkey.  The snake is very unique and you can barely find it if you are trying to check out for them in different habitats.

Cropani’s tree Boa

The Cropani’s tree snake is an endangered species that is found in Maracatu the state of Sao Paulo in Brazil.

During your visit, there is a very slim chance that you will find them because they are very elusive in nature. They are nonvenomous and you should check out the different species in the region.  They are known to thrive in the coastal plain of Brazil.

The Aruba Island Rattlesnake

This snake is on the list of the rarest snakes in the world and is found on the island of Aruba and they are venomous it is important to note that they are rare species and they can grow up to 88 centimeters long and they mostly thrive off the coast of Venezuela. They come in different colors such as light brown and pink hues.

They consume a wide array of creatures such as lizards, birds, and other rodents.  There are about two hundred of these snakes in the region hence their status of being endangered.

Stripped Blind Snake

The stripped blind snake is an endangered species that you are going to find in southeast Asia. They are nonvenomous species and they can grow up to 50 centimeters long and are native to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. 

The snakes usually have white and black stripes that alternate on their bodies.   There is little chance for you to see these snakes because they usually burrow themselves underground hence very mysterious species.

Antiguan Racer

These snakes are very unique species that you are going to find in the islands of Antigua and Barbuda. 

They are critically endangered species and they are rear-fanged snakes that had reached an extinction level in the late 1800s and the species has ever since increased.

However, there are about a thousand snakes on the island and during your trip to the region, you are less likely to find them. Environmental degradation and habitat loss is the main reason the creatures have become endangered. They are slow snakes and do not bite.

Albany Adder

The Albany adder is species that is endangered and it is found in South Africa. They are pit vipers and they have distinctive bumps around the eyes and they can grow up to 27 centimeters long.  The snake is mysterious and brown in nature. They are active late in the afternoon and they likely like to hide under the rocks since their numbers are very minute this is why they are very rare to find them in different habitats.  Their venom is still a mystery because of their rare nature.

St. Lucia racer

The St. Lucia racer snake is on the list of the rarest snakes in the world and is a unique species that you are going to find in the west indies in the Caribbean.  They are nonvenomous species and they are commonly called ornate snakes because they cause no harm to humans. According to data, there are only about twenty left in the wild in St. Lucia and chances of seeing them are very minimal.

Spider-tailed horned viper

The spider-tailed horned viper is a unique snake that is found in Iran and it is known to grow up to 53 centimeters long. They are very venomous snakes and you should watch out for them. Although they are very rare there is a higher chance that you might encounter them in the region.  They are vipers in nature hence they will likely attack you in case you encounter them. However, since they are very few then you are less likely to encounter them during your trip to the region. It has a rough tail that is like a spider and it uses it to lure birds. They can camouflage in different regions around the country.

Trang Blind Snake and Roxane’s Blind Snake

The snake is on the list of the rarest snakes in the world and is known to grow up to 23 centimeters long and they are nonvenomous in nature. These snakes are found in Thailand and there is very little information about them because of their reclusive and their scarce nature.  They were seen only when they were discovered and during your trip, you are less likely to find them. 

Round Island Boa

The round island boa is a snake that can grow up to 150 centimeters and they are found in the round islands of Mauritius. They are vulnerable species and you are less likely to find them in the different regions. The body of the snake is covered by small-keeled scales and is nocturnal in nature. 

Ross’ Wolf Snake

The Ross wolf snake is a species that is found in the southeast Asia region and they are nonvenomous in nature.   They are colubrid species and you will find them in Dalupiri island in the Philippines. The snake is very rare and there is a high chance that you might not encounter them in different regions.  The dark brown snake does not have any pattern and with its cylindrical body, it is very distinctive and circular pupils. The forest where this creature is located is fragmented and there is a continued degradation this has continued to reduce the number of the creatures.

Bolo Snake

The bolo snake is on the list of the rarest snakes in the world and is a unique species that you are going to find in the islands of Fiji. They are some of the most endangered species on the planet. They can grow up to 50 centimeters long. They are venomous and they are endangered species and they are found in the islands of Viti Levu in Fiji.

Cuban khaki dwarf boa

These snakes are very unique in nature and they can grow up to 300 centimeters. They are found in the west indies and are nonvenomous in nature. They are the rarest snakes in the world and they are the only boa snakes in the west indies.  They are endangered species and they can grow up to 3 feet long.

Santa Catalina Island Rattlesnake

The Santa Catalina island rattlesnake is a unique species that is very rare across the world it is only found in the Gulf of California in Isla Santa Catarina. It is a rattle snake therefore it is very venomous and you should watch out for these creatures during your travel to the region.  The snake is able to adapt to their environment and therefore they are very efficient at hunting birds. They are very slender and they are classified as critically endangered because of their smaller numbers. They are impeccable climbers therefore there is very little chance that you can encounter them.

Leaf-scaled Sea Snake

The leaf-scaled sea snake is a legendary species that is found on the western coast of Australia. They can grow up to 80 centimeters and they are venomous snakes, the leaf-scaled sea snake that is very rare and you are less likely to find them in the different parts of Australia’s western coast.

Short-Nosed Sea Snake

The short-nosed sea snake is a venomous snake that is known to inhabit the northwestern region of Australia.

They are known to grow up to 60 centimeters long and they like to thrive on the western coast of Australia.  Since they like to rest underwater there is a high chance that you will find them on the reef flats.

These snakes are on a major decline therefore you can likely find less of them. Climate change and habitat degradation are some of the main reasons why this creature has become endangered.
