Swiss Travel Pass mountain excursions

Stoos

Stoos is a really impressive place as it has the steepest funicular in the world – yes, in the whole wide world.

You will get into a very nicely designed funicular that will take you up the mountain and in the meantime, you will be able to see how steep is the climb: at one moment it goes above 90 percent angle.

Stoos is located at 1305 meters and once you get there you will find the whole village up there: it is a famous hiking place in summer and skiing place in the winter season.

The village is quite small with a population of over 100 people, but in the daytime, it doubles, triples, and so on as so many people come there each day. You will find many restaurants, hotels and a nice mountain station.

Mount Rigi

Mount Rigi
Mount Rigi

Mount Rigi is a very nice location with beautiful views of Lucerne surrounding and a huge lake.

Mount Rigi elevation is 1798 meters and it is surrounded by huge mountains all around – you may see white peaks in summertime as well.

On the mountain, you will find a train station with a hotel, restaurant and a huge viewing point area.

This excursion with a Swiss Travel Pass is free.

Stanserhorn

Stanserhorn is another beautiful viewing point in the canton of Nidwalden.

Stanserhorn is at 1898 meters and has a beautiful revolving restaurant where you can enjoy local food and even a candlelight dinner.

I really suggest visiting Stanserhorn in the late evening as all the lights are on in the surroundings – the view is magical.

As well Stanserhorn is a great place to hike around and simply spend time with friends or family.

This excursion with a Swiss Travel Pass is free.

Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch
Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch is one of the most exclusive mountain stations in Switzerland.

It is sitting at a whopping 3463 meters altitude and winter is there all year long.

The location is extremely beautiful with the views of the glacier, it has the highest watch shop in Europe, restaurants, chocolate shop and so many other activities.

The trip starts in Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen and once you reach Kleine Scheidegg – the train goes really steep up and enters the mountain – you will ride quite a while in the middle of the mountain. It was an engineering wonder once this railway was built.

Check out: the best hikes in the Jungfrau region.

The trip to Jungfraujoch can easily be a whole day trip as there’s so much to see and do on the top. Just the views themselves are jaw-dropping.

Gornergrat

Gornergrat hotel
Gornergrat hotel

Actually, I have just done a hike to Gornergrat from Zermatt – a magical place. The hike itself is 3-4 hours with an astonishing end place at Gornergrat hotel.

Gornergrat is at 3100 meters and the train will take you straight from Zermatt Gornergrat station (not the main station). The train will go through beautiful valleys and slowly will climb up to the top (you will climb 1500 meters in altitude).

On the top, you will find an iconic Gornergrat hotel with a restaurant and souvenir shop.

As well there is a small chapel, Zooom the Matterhorn @Gornergrat experience, and a huge viewing area.

The mountains all around you are one of the highest in Switzerland, many 4000ers with white peaks, glaciers, and many other natural wonders. This place is magical and offers one of the best mountain experiences in Switzerland.

If you have more time – I highly recommend spending time in the Gornergrat hotel as at night you can watch the stars in this pristine place.

Matterhorn Paradise

Matterhorn is pretty much the most famous mountain in Switzerland – it is the very well-known Toblerone mountain.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is a mountain station located at 3883 meters – the highest mountain station in Europe.

The mountain station is not located on Matterhorn – but in front of it and offers the best views of the mountain and if you are lucky – you can even see Mont Blanc in France.

The trip to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise will start in Zermatt and with a couple of changes of mountain gondolas, you will reach the top in less than 1 hour. Be aware that the air is thinner up there and you may feel dizzy in the beginning.

In the mountain station, you will find a shop, a restaurant, a museum, and a glacier paradise (you will be able to walk inside the glacier).

In this place, even in summer, some people go skiing as snow never leaves you at such altitude.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is really a special place to spend the whole day.

Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus
Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus is yet another beautiful mountain station next to Lucerne.

Mount Pilatus is located at 2128 meters altitude and is reachable with gondolas from Kriens or with a train from Alpnachstad. This is an exceptional place as there are not that many places in the world where you can reach the mountain top not only with a cable car but with a train as well.

The whole climb will take you less than one hour. The train ride is pretty steep and offers amazing experience.

The views from Mount Pilatus are magical: you can see many other peaks and a huge lake below.

On the top you will find many viewing points, a shop, a restaurant, and even a hotel.

Schilthorn

Schilthorn
Schilthorn

Schilthorn is a famous location in Switzerland as one of the Bond movies (You only live twice) was shot over there in the Swiss Alps.

Schilthorn is reachable in two ways: by a gondola from Stechelberg and by a gondola from Mürren.

I would highly recommend the Mürren way, becaus to reach Mürren you will need to take a gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and after that you will take a beautiful old school red Swiss train to Mürren. This train ride is quite panoramic and you will see the huge mountains on the other side the whole time. So the whole trip from Lauterbrunnen to Schilthorn via Mürrern will be one great experience.

Schilthorn is located at 2970 meters altitude and other there you will find a huge viewing area and as well a restaurant where you can relax and enjoy the 360 degrees views.

It is a great place to hike and spend time with your family.

Titlis

Titlis Cliff Walk

Titlis is the only place in Switzerland that has a turning mountain gondola – it turns around 360 degrees once you go up. It is quite an experience.

Titlis is a very famous skiing location in winter and hiking location in summer.

Titlis is located at 3238 meters and offers quite a lot of activities:

  1. The famous Titlis Cliff walk – 3,041 meters above sea level and 500 meters off the ground. I have done it myself – a very cool experience.
  2. Glacier cave – do you want to spend some time inside the glacier?
  3. Ice Flyer – it will take you above the glacier.
  4. Titlis Glacier Park – a perfect place for families to ski down the slopes on a minibob and many other fun activities.
  5. A restaurant and accommodation – perfect place to relax and spend a night.

Glacier 3000

Glacier-3000
Glacier-3000

Glacier 3000 is yet another glacier experience in Switzerland located not so far from the famous Gstaad.

Glacier 3000 is located at over 3000 meters altitude and you can reach a glacier from there just in minutes.

On the mountain, you will as well find the highest toboggan run in the world, a restaurant, a glacier walk, and a famous Tissot Suspension bridge walk (as seen in the picture above).

Glacier 3000 is a perfect place to spend more time in the summertime as you can walk on a plateau and hike at over 3000 meters altitude for quite some time, no need to hike higher. Over there you will as well find some astonishing via Ferrata routes.

In wintertime, you can experience amazing dogsled rides, cross-country skiing, and skiing or snowboarding.

This place is a lot of fun all year round.
